The Good Design Awards is a comprehensive program for the evaluation and encouragement of design organized by Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO). The award’s parent organization is the Good Design Products Selection System (commonly known as the G Mark system), established in 1957 by the then Ministry of International Trade and Industry (the current Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry).
The materials published when the Good Design Awards (G Mark system) was first launched stated that its objective was to "select and publicize good design to raise the standard of living and spur industrial development and export trade by enhancing product quality". Within 50 years of the award system's inception, society had matured and design's role had gone far beyond improving product quality. However, this program is still dedicated to advancing lifestyle and industrial activity by selecting outstanding design.
